Today, in 1775, Jane Austen was born. Her novels chronicling the lives and loves of Georgian-Era women are perennially popular. Her famous heroines–strong-willed Lizzie Bennet, romantic Marianne Dashwood, practical Anne Elliot–navigate the complex social strictures and societal mores of their time. In wry, sharp language, Austen paints a compelling picture of the world in which she lived and the rules that women of her time were expected to follow.

Nearly 200 years after Austen’s death, her novels are still flying off the shelves and new movie and television adaptations are being filmed. She’s even the favorite author of Twilight’s Bella.

Austen wrote six novels: Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion, Emma, Mansfield Park, and Northanger Abbey. Do you have a favorite? What about their movie adaptations? Do you like Colin Firth as Mark Darcy, Keira Knightly as Elizabeth Bennet, or Emma Thompson as Elinor Dashwood? Tell us in the comments.
