The snap dress!

I am quite the fashionista. My closet is full of designer pieces by Rodarte, Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen, and many others. You might think I shop solely at fancy department stores like Saks Fifth Avenue or Bloomingdale’s, but you’d be wrong. I buy all of my designer duds at Target. There’s just no way I could afford anything by these world famous designers with my meager allowance, but thanks to the Go International line I can dress like a celebrity!

The latest designer to collaborate with Target, and contribute to my wardrobe, is Zac Posen. His feminine, flirty, and innovative designs are perfect for spring. The collection is colorful and sophisticated with pieces that include a poufy pink dress, a red leather jacket, and a tailored black tuxedo suit. My favorite piece is the pink dress with snap buttons that you can drape and fold any way you like. Check out this video of Zac himself explaining exactly how to wear all the looks. Just in time for summer, the collection also features a floral string bikini and metallic halter bathing suit. Most of the dresses are between $49.99 and $79.99, and they’re so chic you could even wear them to prom! The most expensive piece is the red leather jacket, which retails for $199.00. The collection goes on sale April 25, but as usual I have to remind you to get there early because you know it’ll be sold out in no time. If you see a blonde girl frantically stocking up on all the pieces, that’s probably me. Don’t be afraid to say hi!

It all starts with a small green shoot.

Today is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. It’s a day for all of us to spend a little time doing something for the environment. Whether you plant a tree, join a community clean-up, or simply sort your recycling you’ll be making a difference.  What we do today is a major part of keeping the planet safe and healthy for future generations. Of course, this is something we should all get into the habit of doing every single day and not just once a year. Earth Day raises awareness on a global scale. This year there’s a major rally on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. to encourage Congress pass a comprehensive climate bill in 2010. Other events include the National Sapling Campaign in Afghanistan in which all Afghan citizens are asked to plant two trees: one for herself and one for the country. Community events in Los Angeles include high school clean-ups, celebratory concerts, and biking tours.

There are similar events occurring all across the country today and through the rest of the month. You can do your part by organizing a clean-up in your neighborhood or planting a small tree in your backyard. It may seem like a small gesture, but imagine if everyone in the world helped in some way — I bet the planet would be in much better shape.

Even if you can’t do anything major, you can still help by signing the Earth Day 2010 Climate Declaration. It’s really easy and it will be seen by representatives in Congress who have the power to make a big difference. If they see how passionate people are about the environment, they’ll be more likely to take action. So sign it today–the Social Girls already have!–and be a part of the solution.

OH.EM.GLEE. This might be the single most anticipated episode of the year! Okay, except maybe for the Lost finale or something, but since I don’t watch Lost, this is the single most anticipated episode of the year for me. And countless others who appreciate the sheer awesomeness of people bursting into song.

The episode starts with Sue Sylvester writing in her notebook, but not just any notebook, a Madonna notebook. According to Sue, “Madonna is the most powerful to ever walk the face of the Earth.” And you know what? I concur!

Sue tells the principal to play Madonna’s record throughout the day over the PA system. This is something I may have to take up with my own principal. Best idea ever!

Rachel’s still lying to the other glee club members about dating JSJ (Jesse St. James), but she needs their advice. Jesse wants to do “it” and Rachel’s not ready. No one knows what to say and all the girls have their own stories of feeling intimidated by guys. I say, “Wait, especially if you don’t feel ready. There’s no shame in waiting.”

Aaaaaaaah, the Cheerios are performing a routine to Madonna’s “Ray of Light”. God, I love this song! Awesome routine, btw. I mean, any routine that incorporates stilts is a winner in my book. Mr. Schue sees the routine and gets an idea for the glee club. He tells them to come up with a Madonna routine of their own. This is gold!

The girls love the idea, but the boys are not having it. Sigh. They say Madonna makes them “uncomfortable.” But Mr. Schue calls them on their recent disrespectful behavior towards the girls and says that they need to embrace Madonna’s message of equality. Madonna, stilts, and a message of female empowerment? BEST EPISODE EVER.

The girls, led by Rachel, launch into Madonna’s “Express Yourself.” I love their outfits: colorful corsets paired with black suits. Very sexy.

Historical moment: Schue owns Sue with his own brand of hair jokes. Haha!

Mercedes and Kurt pay a visit to Sue’s office. She tells a tale of woe regarding her hair. Apparently, when she was younger she tried to bleach it with random chemicals and her hair became so damaged she’s had to keep it short ever since. Boo hoo. I’m not sad for her; she’s evil. Kurt and Mercedes say they have a way of making Sue feel better about herself. I think I know what they’re thinking. Hee!

ZOMG SUE SYLVESTER VOGUE VIDEO! Epic. Win.

Cut to Rachel, Emma, and Finn getting ready for their big night. They sing Madonna’s “Like A Virgin.” Pretty appropriate, if you ask me. The next day we find out only Finn went through with it and he didn’t even like it. See? I told you it’s better to wait. Listen to Taylor, people.

In a move that stuns everyone (especially me), JSJ leaves Vocal Adrenaline and joins the WMHS glee club. He says he’s doing it for Rachel because he cares a lot for her. Is he for real? Or is he a spy? I still don’t trust him and his cherubic good looks.

The Cheerios perform another stunning routine to Madonna’s “Four Minutes” featuring Justin Timberlake. Mercedes and Kurt sing Madonna and Justin’s parts, respectively. I wish my high school’s cheerleading squad performed this well. Er, no offense, of course.

The boys, led by Mr. Schue, sing “What It Feels Like For A Girl.” It’s supposed to help them understand the girls better and respect them more. I don’t know if it’s gonna work because Puck is still being all alpha male about everything. Puck needs to get in touch with his feminine side.

Finn tells Rachel that he really liked her and that he blew it. Awwww. He’s finally realizing the error of his ways! He even shakes hands with JSJ and welcomes him to New Directions. Rivalry quashed! For now, that is.

The episode ends with the cast singing “Like A Prayer”, which just happens to be my favorite Madonna song. I’m going to be humming these songs in my head for the rest of the week. “Life is a mysteryyyyyyyy….”

P.S. I’ve heard rumors that another Madonna-centric Glee episode is in the works. Is it just me or has Christmas come early this year?

Glee is one of the best shows on television right now; Madonna is one of the most popular female musicians of all time. Put the two together and you’ve got pure musical gold. If you’re a gleek, like me and the rest of the Social Girls, then you probably know that tonight is the premiere of the highly anticipated “The Power of Madonna” episode. The cast will be performing some of the music legend’s greatest hits, including “Like a Prayer,” “Express Yourself,” and “What It Feels Like For a Girl.” But did you know that the album featuring all of the cast’s performances will also be available on Amazon and iTunes today? It’s true! Now you can sing along with the cast on the drive to school and in front of the mirror with a hairbrush for a microphone. Don’t be ashamed—we all do it.

I’m so excited for this album that I already pre-ordered it last week! I’ll probably drive my entire family crazy by playing all the songs over and over again, but can you blame me? I mean, it’s Madonna and Glee—a match made in heaven! Now, where did I put my hairbrush…

Today is tennis star Maria Sharapova’s birthday—she turns 23 years old. Maria’s achievements are pretty astounding. When she was 17, she won her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, and, at 18, she became one of the youngest female players ever to rank number one in the world. To date, Maria has won three Grand Slam championships, 21 Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) singles titles, and three doubles titles.
