Cool Thing of the Day: Gemstones and Crystals

by Katie on November 9, 2009

Gemstones

For thousands of years, people have believed in the power of crystals. Believers say that the crystals can harness energy. Thus, certain stones can absorb or deflect negative energy, while others can channel positive energy to whoever wears them. Whether you believe in these claims or not, you can still enjoy the history, heritage, and beauty of crystals on bracelets, necklaces, and earrings. Here are some ways to choose the right crystal or gemstone for you.

Amethyst (violet) – This lovely purple gem is supposed to grant wisdom and spirituality to its wearer. It’s also said to increase one’s psychic ability.

Sapphire (blue) – Sapphire symbolizes trust, sincerity, truth, and faithfulness. It’s sometimes used for engagement rings for that reason.

Rose Quartz (pink) – This stone is said to attract all forms of unconditional love, from romantic love to self love to the nurturing love of family.

Jade (green) – Jade was considered an imperial gem in ancient China and was used for the finest objects and artworks. Today it is considered a lucky charm and is thought to grant longevity and vitality to those who wear it.

Tiger Eye (brown) – This dark, often striped, stone is said to bring its wearer courage, strength, and willpower.

Ruby (red) – Of course this red jewel is associated with love, but it also signifies freedom, power, and optimism.

Onyx (black) – Cool and sleek, onyx allegedly helps its wearer with determination, inspiration, stability, and security.
