Question of the Day: Favorite Barbie

by Taylor on March 9, 2010

It’s Barbie’s birthday today! She was first introduced to the world during the American International Toy Fair in 1959 and the rest is, well, history. I guess I’m too old to play with Barbies, but I still love them! Malibu Barbie will always be my favorite. Do you have a favorite Barbie? Is it the original vintage ponytail Barbie? Doctor Barbie? Businesswoman Barbie? Which Barbie do you like best?

New Music Tuesday: Gorillaz

by Katie on March 9, 2010

gorillaz-plastic-beachAfter a five-year hiatus, the Gorillaz are back with a new album! Their third studio album, titled Plastic Beach, hits stores today and promises to delight fans with the signature edgy and innovative sounds we’ve come to expect from this cartoon band. There are plenty of heart-pounding beats, plaintive melodies, and celebrity guests (like Snoop Dogg) packed in the 16-track disc. The first single “Stylo” is already climbing the charts, and the video features a road trip with Bruce Wilis!

I previewed a few of the songs on Amazon and some standouts include the bittersweet “On Melancholy Hill” and the peppy “Pirate Jet.” Some of the songs are experimental and may not appeal to everyone, but they’re certainly worth a listen if you’re in the mood for something different and less mainstream than what’s on the radio.

Listen to the songs and grab a copy from Amazon.

Today in History: Susan B. Anthony

by Taylor on March 8, 2010

Susan B. Anthony by Southworth & Hawes

It’s hard to believe there was ever a time in history when women weren’t allowed to vote. It’s especially hard to imagine now, when women are making more headway than ever into traditionally male-dominated fields like politics, science, and business. It took many years of protests and rallies and lobbying efforts for women to get the right to vote. One of the women at the forefront of the women’s suffrage movement was Susan B. Anthony.

On March 8, 1884, Anthony appeared before the House of Representatives, arguing for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would finally give women the right to vote and have their voices heard. She argued tirelessly for many years, and finally on June 4, 1919, an amendment was approved by Congress and nicknamed the “Anthony Amendment” in honor of the suffragist. The Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution granting women the right to vote was ratified on August 18, 1920. Unfortunately, Anthony died in 1906 and never got to see the results of her years of hard work. However, her legacy lives on in every woman who exercises her right to vote. Take a moment today to remember this determined, ambitious woman, and thank her for making a difference.

Liveblogging the 2010 Academy Awards

by Alexa on March 7, 2010

5:26 PM: T-minus four minutes (did I say that right?) ’til the Oscars begin. Taylor Lautner, Miley Cyrus, Gabourey Sidibe, and Kristen Stewart have already been spotted on the red carpet. Squee!

5:27 PM: I’m so excited for this. Who will win? Who will win?! Okay, deep breath. Are you guys as excited as I am?

5:28 PM: All of the nominees are onstage. Sandra Bullock looks gorgeous! Um, so does George Clooney. Eek, I love Colin Firth! Gabourey is getting her pose on! Wow, these nominees are all so amazing!!

5:31 PM: And it officially begins. OMG, it’s Doogie Howser! I mean, Neil Patrick Harris. He’s singing in a sparkly suit. Love it!

5:33 PM: So glamorous. I wish I was there! In due time, Alexa, in due time.

5:34 PM: Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, the hosts tonight, take the stage.

5:37 PM: They’re making fun of everyone, even Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren! They’re funny though.

5:40 PM: Some of the stars, like George Clooney, are clearly not amused. But I’m LOLing.

5:44 PM: Penelope Cruz (looking beautiful) presents the first award for Best Supporting Actor. The odds are in favor of Christoph Waltz, but we’ll see…And it is him! So, I guess sometimes the predictions are true.

5:50 PM: Ryan Reynolds is so cute! He’s giving the summary for the movie, The Blind Side, one of the nominees for Best Picture.

5:55 PM: Cameron Diaz and Steve Carrell take the stage. Wow, Cameron looks so pretty! Hehe all the animated characters, like fantastic Mr. Fox and Coraline, are talking about what it would be like to win an Oscar. It’s cute!

5:58 PM: My money’s on Up for Best Animated Film. And I was right! Up wins!

6:00 PM: Ooh, two of my favorite actresses, Miley Cyrus and Amanda Seyfried, are on stage. I’m loving their dresses! They’re presenting Best Original Song. And the winner is…”The Weary Kind”, the theme from Crazy Heart.

6:05 PM: Chris Pine talks about District 9, another Best Picture nominee.

6:11 PM: Robert Downey, Jr. and Tina Fey take the stage. Wow, Tina Fey looks gorgeous in her sparkly black dress. Why is Robert Downey, Jr. wearing blue sunglasses? Haha, their banter is definitely one of the funniest of the night!

6:15 PM: The Hurt Locker wins Best Original Screenplay! Mark Boal’s the screenwriter; his speech made me teary-eyed.

6:17 PM: Molly Ringwald and Matthew Broderick present a memorial for late director, John Hughes. He helped shape both of their careers.

6:22 PM: All of the young stars from John Hughes’ movies are on stage, including Jon Cryer, Macauley Culkin, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy. It’s very touching.

6:23 PM: Samuel L. Jackson presents Up, one of the ten Best Picture nominees. I love this movie!

6:25 PM: Okay, is it just me or do some people in the audience look bored? What is wrong with them?!

6:27 PM: LOL, I officially love Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin together. They’re hilarious.

6:28 PM: Carey Mulligan (she’s nominated!) and Zoe Saldana (from Avatar!) present the awards for Best Animated Short. And the winner is…Logorama! I haven’t seen it, but it looks interesting.

6:33 PM: The nominees for Best Documentary Short are presented, and the Oscar goes to…Music By Prudence.

6:35 PM: The nominees for the Best Live Action Short are presented. The New Tenants wins!

6:37 PM: Ben Stiller is painted up like an avatar! Haha! It’s a good look for him, I think. As usual, he brings the funny, and the nominees for Best Makeup. And the winner is Star Trek!

6:43 PM: Best Actor nominee Jeff Bridges presents Best Picture nominee, A Serious Man.

6:47 PM: Rachel McAdams and Jake Gyllenhaal (swoon) join up to present Best Adapted Screenplay. Edge of my seat…Precious wins! Yay!

6:54 PM: Queen Latifah presents the honorees for the Governor’s Award.

6:55 PM: OMG! It’s time for Best Supporting Actress, presented by Robin Williams! Anna Kendrick looks so nervous–awww! As was predicted before, Mo’Nique wins. Well-deserved, I think. What a powerful performance. If you guys are counting, that’s two wins for Precious so far. Not bad for an Indy.

7:02 PM: Colin Firth presents the vignette for An Education, a Best Picture nominee.

7:05 PM: Sigourney Weaver looks great in a red, one-shoulder dress with a black belt. She’s presenting the award for Outstanding Art Direction. Woot! Avatar wins!

7:09 PM: Fashion royalty Tom Ford and Sarah Jessica Parker present Best Costume nominees. Sandy Powell wins for The Young Victoria.

7:11 PM: I gotta say, the speeches tonight have been great–funny, poignant, and sweet.

7:12 PM: Charlize Theron presents Best Picture nominee, Precious.

7:16 PM: LOL! Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin do a spoof of Paranormal Activity.

7:18 PM: OMG K-Stew and Taylor Lautner are on stage! This is, hands down, the best moment of the night, isn’t it? They’re giving a tribute to horror movies, like Jaws and Nightmare on Elm Street–movies that are usually ignored by the Academy. Whoa, that was a pretty creepy montage.

7:24 PM: Zac Efron (so gorgeous) and Anna Kendrick present Best Sound Editing, and the winner is The Hurt Locker! Now the awards for Best Sound Mixing, and the winner is The Hurt Locker again! The race for Best Picture just got tighter.

7:28 PM: Actress Elizabeth Banks takes the stage. Have you guys noticed most of the women are wearing strapless gowns with flowy skirts? It’s a trend, baby!

7:29 PM: John Travolta presents the movie montage for Inglourious Basterds. One of my faves from last year.

7:34 PM: Sandra Bullock looks stunning tonight. Even if she doesn’t win Best Actress, she’s still a winner in my book. I loved her in The Blind Side. She presents Avatar with the Best Cinematography award.

7:37 PM: James Taylor sings a song in tribute to all of the people in the film industry–Patrick Swayze, Michael Jackson, Natasha Richardson, Brittany Murphy–that passed away last year.

7:45 PM: Yup, the strapless dress trend continues with J. Lo. Sam Worthington looks great in his classic suit and glasses. They’re presenting the Best Original Score nominees with some interpretive dancing. Yay, break-dancing and ballet! You can never have enough break-dancing or ballet at the Oscars, if you ask me. The winner for Best Original Score is…Up. I absolutely agree with this decision. That score is breathtaking.

7:53 PM: Awesome speech by Michael Giacchino, the composer for Up’s score. He encourages kids to never give up on their creative dreams, and I must say I concur! That is good advice.

7:55 PM: Avatar wins Best Visual Effects. Fitting.

8:01 PM: Matt Damon presents the nominees for Best Documentary Feature. The Cove wins.

8:05 PM: I hate it when they cut speeches mid-way. I know they’re pressed for time, but still, it’s so rude!

8:07 PM: Tyler Perry presents The Hurt Locker with the award for Best Film Editing. That’s four Oscars for the war movie tonight. Btw, isn’t it crazy how James Cameron is sitting behind Kathryn Bigelow (the director of The Hurt Locker)? They used to be married. Can you say tension?

8:09 PM: Keanu Reeves presents the montage for The Hurt Locker. It looks intense.

8:14 PM: Pedro Almodovar and Quentin Tarantino pair up to present the nominees for Best Foreign Language Film. The winner is Argentina for El Secreto En Sus Ojos (The Secret In Their Eyes).

8:20 PM: Kathy Bates presents the montage for Avatar.

8:23 PM: Vera Farmiga, Tim Robbins, Colin Farrell, Julianne Moore, and Michelle Pfeiffer are on stage. They’re singing the praises of all the nominees for Best Actor with personal anecdotes. It’s a nice touch. And it’s bound to get me teary-eyed all over again.

8:31 PM: Kate Winslet, who won last year for Best Actress, will present the Best Actor award. I am soooooooo nervous! Jeff Bridges wins for Crazy Heart! He gets a standing ovation and loud applause.

8:40 PM: Oprah Winfrey, Stanley Tucci, Peter Sarsgaard, Forest Whitaker, and Michael Sheen talk about the leading ladies nominated for Best Actress. I’m loving this! It gives the audience a little insider’s look at the nominees, which is nice.

8:44 PM: I really don’t know who’s gonna win Best Actress. This is more exciting than the men’s race!

8:47 PM: Sean Penn will give out the award for Best Actress. I am on pins and needles right now! Whoa! I did not expect this but it’s Sandra Bullock! Yup, her speech makes me cry. Fun fact: She also won a Razzie for Worst Actress for her role in All About Steve.

8:53 PM: The nominees for Best Director are presented by Barbra Streisand. If Kathryn Bigelow wins, she’ll be the first woman to ever win this award! And she wins! Wow, history-making moment here, folks.

8:58 PM: And finally, the moment we’ve all been waiting for…OMG, The Hurt Locker wins Best Picture!!!

9:01 PM: It’s over! Awesome show! I think this was the best I’ve seen in years. It had the laugh-out-loud moments and the tear-jerking moments, and what else could you ask for?

Must have!

Must have!

It’s official––Target is my favorite store. I mean, what’s not to love? It’s got everything you could ever need all in one easy-to-navigate building; its wares are extremely affordable; and it has the clout to get super famous designers––like Rodarte, Isaac Mizrahi, and Anna Sui –– to take time out of their busy schedules and design a collection exclusively for the Target customer.

The latest high fashion designer to devote his energy and creativity to Target’s “Designer Collaborations” line is renowned French couturier Jean Paul Gaultier. Isn’t it awesome? I love Gaultier’s quirky, avant-garde creations. You may remember some of his designs for Madonna’s concert tours (seriously, who could forget that cone bra?). For his Target debut, Gaultier has drawn inspiration from classic American style and includes allusions to rock ‘n’ roll and old Hollywood glamour in many of his pieces. The collection includes a gorgeous yellow halter dress that’s already calling my name, a cropped motorcycle leather jacket with zipper detail, mesh tattoo-print leggings, a khaki trench coat, and a gingham bustier. There are also these really cool t-shirts with face and eye prints that I’m totally coveting.

I think Target is trying to make me go bankrupt. I’ve barely recovered from my last shopping spree for Rodarte, and now the store is dangling more designer goodies in front of my fashion-hungry face. It’s not fair! I guess it’s time to find more baby-sitting clients. I’ll see you at the store on March 7! Don’t be late or you’ll miss out!

Question of the Day: Favorite Alice

by Taylor on March 5, 2010

I’ve been thinking a lot about Alice lately since a new take on the beloved character hits theaters today. The Alice in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland is a bit older –– she’s 19 –– and returns to Wonderland with no recollection of ever being there at all. I wonder if I’ll like the teenaged Alice more than the tween Alice. I think the Disney version will always be my favorite, but what about you?

Who’s your favorite Alice through the years?

Mia rocking her newly short hair on the cover of Teen Vogue

Mia rocking her short hair on the cover of Teen Vogue

Mia Wasikowska is the luckiest girl in Hollywood right now. The Australian actress is about to hit the big time with her role in Tim Burton’s whimsical adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classics, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. Mia plays Alice, the precocious young girl whose insatiable curiosity leads her into a world of crazy adventure and self-discovery. And it looks like Mia is about to follow in Alice’s footsteps –– after all, Hollywood is one big crazy adventure.

Yet, Mia’s luck doesn’t stop there: not only does she get to play a beloved character on the big screen, but she also gets to work with some of the most talented actors in the industry, including Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and Anne Hathaway. In her cover story for Teen Vogue, Mia admits that working with Johnny Depp gave her butterflies and says, “I was a little starstruck”. I don’t blame her –– who wouldn’t be awed by Johnny Depp? He’s too cool for words.

As Mia continues to blaze a trail through the wondrous land of Hollywood (she was featured on Vanity Fair’s young Hollywood cover), the Social Girls will be following her every move. She’s definitely worthy of being on our radar.

Link of the Day: Lady Gaga Takes Over

by Alexa on March 3, 2010

Lady Gaga’s fans are taking their cues from the flamboyant singer and dressing up in bedazzled and feathered duds to attend her concerts. Some of these fans are extremely creative––check out the two guys who glued black drinking straws to their shirts to create the most insane-looking shoulder pads I’ve ever seen!

If I ever get to go to a Gaga concert, I’ll wear my Kermit the Frog puppet around my neck as a scarf and place a bow atop my head. That’ll look good, don’t you think?
